Can you teach online with a bachelor degree?

Online learning is not only more convenient and flexible, but it can be the fastest growing sector of work in higher education today. More students than ever before take online courses. More professionals are looking for credentials online. More colleges, universities and private companies are turning to the internet as a reliable source of education, training and certification. Can you teach online with a bachelor degree?

How much do online teachers earn?

The Labor Statistics Office does not yet separate the given online instructors from traditional ones. The median annual earnings of all post-secondary school teachers in 2010 was approximately $ 59,000. The average 50 percent made between USD 42,000 and 85,000. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $ 30,000, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $ 122,000.

Teachers’ pay, both online and non-online, varies depending on areas such as the field (for example, the faculty of medicine, law, engineering and computer science is more than the faculty of the humanities); level of education and experience; and where a teacher is employed (by a two-year or four-year school; a public or private school; a corporation or other institution).

Many online instructors work as support instructors. This means that they work on a contract basis and are paid for the course. According to the online salary surveys conducted by Get Educated, the universal salary for online college instructors is between $ 1,500 and $ 2,500 for a semester course.

If the instructor is also developing the course or writing assignments, the salary may be higher. Fees for developing online courses typically range from $ 1,000 to $ 3,000, depending on your level of proficiency.

Online instructors also sometimes act as corporate trainers. Instructors who teach adults or work in corporate online training centers may receive higher pay than those who teach for public school systems or universities. Those who start an online teacher career in a corporate environment are sometimes rewarded for one student rather than a course.

Online teacher certification

To become a college instructor, teachers – whether they are online or not – usually need at least a master’s degree. Many have PhDs in their specialty.

To become an online instructor at university level, you don’t need any special educational certificates or endorsements, but certifications can provide additional training that can improve your online competence and be attractive to your employer.

Universities are increasingly offering online education certificates and / or degrees with an online focus. These educational qualifications range from certifications in online teaching to a master’s degree in online teaching to the design and development of online education.

If you intend to teach at K-12 level, you need to examine whether you have obtained teaching certification or support in your fields of specialization. Private companies and schools often do not require certification.
